The Nordic fiber gap
The Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR 2023) recommend 25-35g of fiber per day for adults, or approximately 3g per MJ of energy intake.1 This is among the most evidence-based dietary fiber recommendations in the world, drawing on decades of Nordic population studies.
Average intake across the Nordic countries is approximately 20-22g per day. Better than Southern Europe, but still 5-15g short of the recommendation.
Each Nordic country has its own context:
Denmark occupies a unique position. Copenhagen is home to Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and the largest pharmaceutical company in Europe by market capitalization. Denmark has the highest per-capita GLP-1 medication awareness in Europe. The cultural proximity to these medications makes fiber supplementation conversations more common here than almost anywhere else.
Sweden has a strong health-conscious consumer base with high digital literacy and one of the highest rates of online supplement purchasing in Europe. Amazon.se launched in 2020 and has steadily expanded its health supplement selection.
Finland and Norway share similar dietary patterns with strong whole grain traditions. Finland has limited Amazon presence, and Norwegian consumers face higher import costs due to Norway’s position outside the EU.
For a broader perspective on how this gap affects GLP-1 medication users, see our European fiber gap analysis.
Where to buy fiber supplements in the Nordics
Amazon.se serves Sweden directly with Prime delivery. Growing supplement selection.
Amazon.de ships to Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Often the largest selection and best prices for supplements, though import duties may apply for Norway.
Local pharmacies remain the primary purchasing channel in the Nordics:
- Sweden: Apoteket, Apotea, Kronans Apotek
- Denmark: Apotek, Matas, Helsam
- Norway: Apotek 1, Vitusapotek
- Finland: Apteekki (pharmacy chain)
iHerb ships to all Nordic countries and is popular for US supplement brands.
Vi-Siblin (ispaghula husk granules) is the established Nordic pharmacy standard for psyllium-based fibre supplementation. It is available at Apoteket, Apotea, Kronans Apotek, and equivalent pharmacy chains across Denmark, Norway, and Finland. It is not sold on Amazon.
In Denmark specifically, Husk (a Danish psyllium brand) is widely available through Matas and Danish pharmacies.
GLP-1 medications in the Nordics
The Nordic countries have some of the highest GLP-1 medication usage rates in Europe.
Denmark has the highest per-capita GLP-1 usage in Europe, driven by domestic awareness of Novo Nordisk products. Both Ozempic and Wegovy are available. Oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) is also prescribed, with a 30-minute fasting requirement that creates specific timing considerations for fiber supplements.
Sweden has Wegovy available through regional health authorities (landsting). Reimbursement is possible but varies by region.
Norway covers semaglutide under the blue prescription (bla resept) system for patients with BMI 30+ or BMI 27+ with comorbidities.
Finland has Kela reimbursement that varies by indication and patient history.
Across all Nordic countries, GLP-1-related constipation affects 5-24% of users. The combination of reduced food intake, slower gastric emptying, and existing sub-optimal fiber consumption makes supplementation clinically relevant for this population.
How to choose the right fiber supplement in the Nordics
If you want the established Nordic option: Psyllium husk (ispaghula) from a local pharmacy. Available at every pharmacy chain, affordable, and your healthcare provider already knows it. This is the default recommendation across Scandinavia.
If you are on a GLP-1 medication: Start with PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum). The gentlest fiber type, available on Amazon.de. Once your digestive system stabilises, you can add inulin for prebiotic support. Given Denmark’s proximity to Novo Nordisk and the Nordics’ high GLP-1 awareness, this combination is increasingly common.
If you want the strongest prebiotic evidence: Chicory inulin at 12g/day. Available as bulk powder on Amazon.de. The EFSA health claim applies specifically to chicory inulin at this dose.
If you are in Norway: Be aware of import duty thresholds for non-EU purchases. Amazon.de orders over a certain value may incur customs and VAT charges. Psyllium husk from a Norwegian pharmacy (Apotek 1, Vitusapotek) avoids this entirely.
If you are in Finland: Amazon has limited direct presence. iHerb is popular for supplement purchases. Finnish pharmacies (Apteekki) stock psyllium husk products.
Fiber types explained
Psyllium husk (ispaghula): The most studied fiber for constipation. Absorbs water, adds bulk. Available at Nordic pharmacies and on Amazon. Take with at least 250ml of water.
Chicory inulin: The strongest prebiotic evidence. Feeds beneficial gut bacteria. EFSA health claim at 12g/day. High-FODMAP. Start at 4g/day and ramp over 2 weeks.
PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum): Gentlest option. Dissolves clear, tasteless, minimal gas. Good for IBS and GLP-1 users with nausea. Lower prebiotic effect than inulin.
Resistant starch: Emerging research on GLP-1 secretion support. Found in green bananas, cooled potatoes, and some supplements. Evidence is promising but not yet at the level of psyllium or inulin for established outcomes.
Which fiber should you choose?
If your main concern is constipation relief, start with psyllium husk powder. It has the most clinical evidence for improving stool frequency and consistency. Take with at least 250ml of water per serving. Browse psyllium husk powder on Amazon.se
If you are starting a GLP-1 medication (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro), consider PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum) or Sunfiber first. PHGG is the gentlest fiber for GLP-1 users because it produces minimal gas, dissolves completely, and is low-FODMAP certified. Avoid jumping straight to high-dose inulin in the first weeks. Browse PHGG / Sunfiber on Amazon.se
If you want prebiotic and microbiome support, look for chicory inulin powder. At 12g/day it carries the only proprietary EU health claim for bowel function. Start at 4g/day and ramp up over 2 weeks to avoid gas and bloating. Browse chicory inulin powder on Amazon.se
If you have IBS or FODMAP sensitivity, start with PHGG or acacia fiber. Both are slow-fermenting, low-FODMAP, and produce significantly less gas than inulin or psyllium. Browse acacia fiber on Amazon.se
If you already know your tolerance and want broader microbiome coverage, look for a fiber blend that combines two or more soluble fibers. Trade-off: if side effects occur, you cannot isolate which fiber is responsible. Browse prebiotic fiber blends on Amazon.se
For a wider selection, you can also browse the same fiber categories on Amazon.de, which ships to all Nordic countries:
- Flohsamenschalen (psyllium husk powder)
- Chicoree-Inulin (chicory inulin powder)
- PHGG / Sunfiber
- Akazienfaser (acacia fiber powder)
- Ballaststoff-Mischungen (prebiotic fiber blend)
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fiber supplement type in Sweden?
Psyllium husk (ispaghula) is the pharmacy standard across Sweden, available at Apoteket, Apotea, and Meds. For prebiotic support, chicory inulin powder from Amazon.se or Amazon.de offers the strongest evidence at 12g/day. PHGG is the gentlest option for sensitive digestion.
Can I buy fiber supplements on Amazon in Denmark?
Amazon does not have a Danish storefront. Danish consumers shop on Amazon.de, which ships to Denmark in 2-4 days. Amazon.se also ships to Denmark. Local pharmacies and Matas.dk are alternatives.
What fiber type works best with Ozempic?
Start with a single-ingredient fiber and ramp slowly. PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum) is the gentlest for GLP-1 users with nausea. Psyllium husk has the broadest evidence for constipation. Take fiber at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after your GLP-1 injection.
How much fiber should Scandinavians eat per day?
The NNR 2023 recommends 25-35g per day for adults. Average Nordic intake is 20-22g. A supplement providing 5-15g per day can close most of the gap.
What is the difference between psyllium husk and chicory inulin?
Psyllium husk is a bulk-forming fiber with the strongest evidence for constipation relief. Chicory inulin is a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and carries an EFSA health claim at 12g/day. Psyllium is better for immediate bowel regularity. Inulin is better for long-term microbiome support. Both are widely available across the Nordics.
