How we put this guide together
We reviewed the fiber supplement categories available to Dutch consumers on Amazon.nl and Amazon.de (which ships to the Netherlands), focusing on clinical evidence, EFSA-authorized claims, and practical guidance for different health goals.

What is the Dutch fiber gap?
The Dutch Health Council (Gezondheidsraad) recommends 30-40g of fiber per day for adults, one of the highest recommendations in Europe.1 Average Dutch intake sits at approximately 20-22g per day. That is a daily deficit of 10-20g.
The Netherlands also has a uniquely strong connection to the GLP-1 medication landscape. As a major pharmaceutical market with high healthcare access, Dutch patients have relatively early access to new medications. Wegovy (semaglutide) is available through Dutch health insurers, though coverage and reimbursement vary by policy. For a broader look at how fiber deficiency compounds the challenges of GLP-1 medications, see our European fiber gap analysis.
EU regulatory note: EFSA health claims regulation applies in the Netherlands. The EFSA Article 13.5 claim for chicory inulin (12g/day for stool frequency) is one of the few proprietary fiber health claims authorized in the EU.2 The term “prebiotic” is not an authorized health claim in the EU. Products can describe prebiotic function, but cannot use “prebiotic” as a product claim on labels.
Where to buy fiber supplements in the Netherlands
Dutch consumers have multiple purchasing options:
Amazon.nl has a growing health supplement selection. Delivery is typically 1-2 days with Prime.
Amazon.de ships to the Netherlands and often has a larger selection, particularly for German supplement brands. Shipping is usually 2-4 days. Many German fiber supplements are formulated with the same EFSA-compliant claims.
Dutch pharmacies (apotheek) stock Metamucil, OptiFibre, and psyllium-based products. Pharmacy pricing may differ from Amazon.
Bol.com is the Netherlands’ largest domestic e-commerce platform and stocks some fiber supplements.
How to choose the right fiber supplement in the Netherlands
If you want the EFSA-backed prebiotic option: Chicory inulin at 12g/day. The Netherlands is literally where much of the world’s chicory inulin is produced. Look for pure chicory root inulin powder with a single ingredient.
If you are on a GLP-1 medication: Start with PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum). It is the gentlest fiber type, available through Dutch pharmacies and Amazon, and well-tolerated alongside GLP-1 medications. Once your digestive system stabilises, you can add inulin for prebiotic support.
If you want simplicity: Psyllium husk powder. The most studied fiber type, the cheapest per dose, and works well for most people.
Shopping tip: Compare prices between Amazon.nl and Amazon.de before ordering. Amazon.de often has lower prices and a wider selection, with delivery to the Netherlands in 2-4 days.
Which fiber should you choose?
If your main concern is constipation relief, start with psyllium husk powder (vlozaad). It has the most clinical evidence for improving stool frequency and consistency. Take with at least 250ml of water per serving. Browse psyllium husk powder on Amazon.nl
If you are starting a GLP-1 medication (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro), consider PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum) or Sunfiber first. PHGG is the gentlest fiber for GLP-1 users because it produces minimal gas, dissolves completely, and is low-FODMAP certified. Avoid jumping straight to high-dose inulin in the first weeks. Browse PHGG / Sunfiber on Amazon.nl
If you want prebiotic and microbiome support, look for chicory inulin powder. At 12g/day it carries the only proprietary EU health claim for bowel function. Start at 4g/day and ramp up over 2 weeks to avoid gas and bloating. Browse chicory inulin powder on Amazon.nl
If you have IBS or FODMAP sensitivity, start with PHGG or acacia fiber. Both are slow-fermenting, low-FODMAP, and produce significantly less gas than inulin or psyllium. Browse acacia fiber on Amazon.nl
If you already know your tolerance and want broader microbiome coverage, look for a fiber blend that combines two or more soluble fibers. Trade-off: if side effects occur, you cannot isolate which fiber is responsible. Browse prebiotic fiber blends on Amazon.nl
For a wider selection, you can also browse the same fiber categories on Amazon.de, which ships to the Netherlands:
- Flohsamenschalen (psyllium husk powder)
- Chicorée-Inulin (chicory inulin powder)
- PHGG / Sunfiber
- Akazienfaser (acacia fiber powder)
- Ballaststoff-Mischungen (prebiotic fiber blend)
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fiber supplement in the Netherlands?
For prebiotic support, chicory inulin at 12g/day has the strongest evidence and the only proprietary EFSA health claim. For constipation, psyllium husk powder has the broadest clinical evidence. PHGG (partially hydrolysed guar gum) is the gentlest option for sensitive digestion.
Can I buy fiber supplements on Amazon in the Netherlands?
Yes. Amazon.nl has a growing selection. Amazon.de also ships to the Netherlands and often has a larger selection, particularly German brands. Many Dutch consumers shop on both.
Can you take fiber supplements with Ozempic in the Netherlands?
Yes. Take fiber supplements at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after your GLP-1 injection. Wegovy is available in the Netherlands. Coverage varies by insurer. Read more: Oral Wegovy and fiber: how the fasting rule changes everything.
Is chicory inulin the same as a prebiotic?
Chicory inulin functions as a prebiotic fiber (it feeds beneficial gut bacteria). However, under EU regulations, “prebiotic” is not an authorized health claim. Products in the Netherlands cannot use “prebiotic” as a product claim on labels. The authorized claim for chicory inulin is specifically about stool frequency at 12g/day.
